Key Responsibilities
As the Senior Life Insurance Underwriter, you will play a critical role in evaluating complex life insurance applications and delivering sound underwriting decisions that support client objectives and organizational profitability. Your responsibilities will include:
Risk Assessment & Underwriting Analysis:
- Analyze medical, financial, and non-medical information to assess mortality and morbidity risk for individual life insurance applications.
- Evaluate complex and substandard cases while ensuring underwriting decisions align with established guidelines, service standards, and risk management principles.
Client Support & Technical Expertise:
- Provide underwriting guidance and technical expertise to internal teams and external client partners.
- Collaborate with stakeholders to resolve complex underwriting issues and contribute to high-quality client service delivery.
Decision-Making & Case Management:
- Independently manage underwriting files within delegated authority limits while maintaining accuracy and turnaround expectations.
- Prioritize and manage multiple cases effectively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
Collaboration & Leadership:
- Support team development through knowledge sharing, mentoring, training assistance, and participation in departmental initiatives.
- Contribute to a collaborative and innovative team culture focused on continuous improvement and operational excellence.
Industry Engagement & Relationship Management:
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, colleagues, and industry partners.
- Participate in industry events, professional development opportunities, and initiatives that strengthen market presence and client engagement.
Qualifications
To succeed in this role, candidates should demonstrate the following:
Education & Experience:
- College diploma or university degree in a related field, or equivalent industry experience.
- Minimum 6 years of individual life underwriting experience, including exposure to substandard business, medical underwriting, and financial underwriting.
- Experience underwriting multiple product lines such as Life, Disability, or Critical Illness insurance is considered an asset.
Technical Skills:
- Strong knowledge of life insurance underwriting principles, risk assessment methodologies, and medical terminology.
- Ability to interpret complex underwriting evidence and make informed risk decisions independently.
- Comfortable learning and navigating underwriting platforms, systems, and digital tools.
Key Competencies:
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a strong client-service orientation.
- Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
- Highly organized with exceptional time management skills and attention to detail.
- Self-motivated, adaptable, and able to thrive in a collaborative and evolving environment.
- Bilingual French/English communication skills are considered an asset.
